We are a privately-held commercial subcontractor in the Houston area with a reputation for high performance and outstanding service. The Company is continuing to set new milestones and, as a result, is adding new staff and raising the expectations of its Team. We are looking for a Controller who will execute hands-on leadership and administration of all things accounting, as well as participate with Senior Management and Company Executives in developing a Corporate support strategy that enables our Operations groups to focus on their external customers without the burden of administrative distractions.
Organization Structure and Interfaces:
Reports to: CEO
Primary Interfaces: Internal Customers (Employees) and External Customers (Clients) at all levels.
Direct Reports: 4-6.

Pace: high expectations, constant changing targets and quick turnaround is essential due to shifting priorities, changing internal/external customer needs and project specifications;

Commentator, Scorekeeper, Business Partner and Custodian: You will engage in open dialogue with Operational personnel to improve performance, including financial and non-financial information and providing more value-added commentary, striving for timeliness, relevance and brevity. As a scorekeeper, you will develop a strategy to improve both efficiency and effectiveness in the Accounting Department that will scale with the Company’s anticipated growth. As a Business Partner, you will get to know the decision-makers and their needs. You will be the conscience of the business in your role of custodian, ensuring compliance and effective controls.
Key functional experience needs to include the basics of: Typical accounting tip-of-the-iceberg stuff, including accounts receivable, collections, accounts payable, cash forecasting, payroll, sales tax, certified payroll, OCIP/ROCIP reporting, financial reporting, costs and budgets, performance management, internal controls and regulatory compliance. Experience using Sage/Timberline/Procore software strongly preferred. TIP: Experience with private, small construction companies and the ability to roll up your sleeves and help perform the day-to-day accounting tasks when needed will give you a leg up on the others!
A passion for the details and an ability to explain them: This is a big deal! There is a basic requirement to get it right, such as accuracy, reliability and being on top of things! You will be expected to have a sufficient understanding of Operations and an in-depth knowledge of the financial details and the key drivers of the Company. TIP: Thorough understanding of the WIP schedule, percent of completion and how it relates to the financial statements in a GAAP environment will move you to the top of the list.
Strong interpersonal skills and stamina: Not for the faint of heart. The ideal candidate can handle the wear and tear of a fast-paced environment with an advanced sense of urgency while dealing with a multitude of accounting issues that tend to be more shades of gray than black and white. You will need to be a Team Manager (see the big picture and lead staff and coach other departments to success), with a focus on developing the current staff and if needed, recruiting the best staff and their career and personal development.
